Utah E-Bike Laws & Safety Requirements

Utah e-bike laws

Utah’s e-bike laws changed in 2026, including new requirements for helmets, youth riders and e-bike modifications. During the September 15 City Council meeting, a Unified Fire Authority e-bike safety video was shown, highlighting important safe riding practices.

Here are a few key requirements for riders and parents to know.

E-Bike Rules

Know Your E-Bike Class

Utah recognizes three classes of e-bikes:

Class 1: Pedal assist up to 20 mph
Class 2: Throttle-assisted up to 20 mph
Class 3: Pedal assist up to 28 mph

Class 3 e-bikes are not permitted for riders under 16.

Ride Safely

E-bike riders must follow applicable bicycle and traffic laws. Ride in the same direction as traffic, obey signs and signals, yield to pedestrians and follow posted trail regulations. When riding on sidewalks or shared paths, slow down and give pedestrians the right of way.

Parents are encouraged to make sure young riders understand their e-bike’s classification and the rules that apply to them before riding.
