Heavy rains hit EM Monday, minimal flooding reported
Heavy rains on Monday brought measurable precipitation to Eagle Mountain, with most of the storm concentrated on the benches of Lake Mountain.
Despite the volume of rain, the City saw very little flooding thanks to improvements in stormwater infrastructure and proactive efforts by residents.
Only one homeowner reported water reaching their house. According to Eagle Mountain City Stormwater Supervisor Larry Diamond, the homeowner was able to stop the water before any significant damage occurred.
A handful of other residents picked up sandbags from the City to help redirect runoff away from their properties.
“Anytime we get a heavy rainstorm like this, we want residents to know they can always come to us for sandbags,” Diamond said. “We try to keep it between 20 and 30 sandbags per home, and right now we have more than 15,000 sandbags ready to go. That’s plenty to support our residents.”
Diamond emphasized the importance of residents notifying the City when they notice water pooling or water entering their home.
“If you see street flooding, or if water starts coming into your home, please call our hotline and use the stormwater option so we can respond right away,” Diamond said. “The sooner we know, the sooner we can help.”
Diamond credited ongoing stormwater improvements as a major reason Eagle Mountain avoided more serious flooding. Over the past several years, the City has invested in upgrades to detention and retention ponds as well as stormwater pipes.
The City also encourages residents to take small steps at home that can make a big difference. Downspouts should be kept clear and directed away from the foundation of a house, while curbs and storm drain inlets should be free of dirt and debris.
“If you notice a storm drain inlet that’s dirty or clogged, call us and we’ll come take care of it,” Diamond said. “Working together, we can keep flooding risks low and protect our homes and neighborhoods.”
Sandbags are available for free to Eagle Mountain residents. To obtain sandbags, call the City’s hotline at 801-789-5959, opt. 4.
