City launches school supplies assistance program with federal grant
Eagle Mountain City has opened applications for a new school supplies assistance program funded through its annual Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) allocation from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
The program is designed to support local families in need by easing the cost of back-to-school essentials for middle and high school students.
Starting in 2023, Eagle Mountain began receiving federal CDBG funding, which is intended to support community development efforts, particularly those that benefit low- and moderate-income residents. This year, the City is using a portion of its allocation for public services to launch the school supplies initiative.
“We know how expensive preparing for a new school year can be, especially for families with teenagers,” said Natalie Winterton, Assistant to the City Manager. “This program is one way we can offer direct support to those who need it most.”
The initiative is targeted specifically at middle and high school students, as there are already a number of nonprofit and school-based programs that help elementary-aged children.
City staff recognized a gap in available resources for older students and decided to focus efforts where they could make the most impact.
“There aren’t as many programs out there for students in grades 6 through 12,” Winterton explained. “We wanted to step in and make sure those students and their families feel supported and equipped for a successful school year.”
To qualify, families must meet federal low- to moderate-income standards, which are set by HUD and based on household size and income. Winterton emphasized that eligibility is determined strictly by those federal guidelines, not by the City.
Supplies will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. Families who meet eligibility requirements are encouraged to apply early to ensure they receive assistance.
“We’re really focused on making this process as smooth and welcoming as possible,” Winterton said. “We want our students to have the tools they need to thrive academically.”
