Eagle Mountain Academy is your exclusive, behind-the-scenes pass to see how the City runs, from paving our streets and maintaining our parks to shaping policy and planning for the future. This free, six-week course, offered each spring and fall, brings residents face-to-face with City leaders and departments in an engaging, interactive experience. Graduates are celebrated with a special recognition from the City Council.

Week 1 – Meet the City

This week includes a basic introduction to city government including learning about the role of our Mayor and City Council.

You will have a chance to hear from someone from our City Manager’s office about managing the city as a whole.

We dive into finance to help you understand the processes we go through, how various projects are funded, and where your tax dollars go.

Lastly, you will hear from our communications department – our main connection to the community. We discuss resident engagement and the thought and strategy that goes into it. 

Week 2 – Keeping the City Safe

In this class, we discuss police, fire, and emergency management.

Representatives from the Utah County Sheriff’s Office and the United Fire Authority talk to the class and answer questions about safety in Eagle Mountain City.

The City’s Emergency Manager also shares the many resources the City provides to help residents be prepared for any scenario.

This week typically includes a tour of a fire station and some hands-on activities. 

Week 3 – How the City Grows

This week, we hear from the major departments that are involved in facilitating city growth.

This includes planning – discussing everything from the City’s general plan, how zoning works, and more.

Engineering explains the infrastructure planning that goes into developing our water, sewer, and streets systems.

Lastly, you will hear from economic development. Our department head explains how much Cities can be involved in business planning and facilitation, as well as the red tape that keeps local government in a neutral position.

This class also features a fun game of simulated city-building, so you can try your hand at some city planning.

Week 4 – Getting Outside

This week, we go outdoors to explore some of the amenities you see around the community.

You will have a chance to check out some of our road maintenance equipment and talk to a streets expert on the ongoing task of keeping our roads clean and safe.

We also take the class out to the cemetery to talk about how we created and maintain the Pony Express Cemetery.

Lastly, you will have the chance to explore one of our City parks with little-known facts and features shared by our parks crew. 

Week 5 – The City You Don’t See

During this week’s class, you will have the chance to learn about the parts of the City that most people don’t think about on a daily basis. In fact, these city facilities are frequently used, but almost never visited – sewer, water, and stormwater

We will take you on an aromatic tour of our sewer facility and share about our water treatment methods.

You will also have the chance to learn about our stormwater department and the hard work that goes into maintaining our stormwater system to keep us safe during weather events.

Also, you will hear from our water department and see a staff-only facility that demonstrates the many factors that play into our water management. 

Week 6 – Our Unique Community

This week’s class focuses on the aspects of Eagle Mountain City that residents engage with most and that make Eagle Mountain such a unique place to live.

We will take you on a tour of our library and hear about the countless programs and opportunities ran out of our library.

Our recreation department shares about the programs and partnerships the City has in this area and the ways in which we try to tailor our programs to our residents’ interests.

You will also have a chance to hear from our team that puts on our award-winning events in Eagle Mountain City. This department is always working on something to bring our community together and give people the opportunity to connect.

Finally, you will also learn about the City’s unique wildlife and open space preservation efforts. We even take you to visit a few project locations that help make Eagle Mountain one of the most wildlife-friendly cities in Utah.
