Pony Express Pkwy repairs ahead of schedule near Silverlake Amphitheater
Work to repair roadway settlement along Pony Express Parkway near Silverlake Amphitheater is progressing faster than expected.
What was originally anticipated to last through late November is now on track to be completed by the end of October — nearly a month ahead of schedule.
“The project has been going well,” Hilton said. “Our deadline for completion will be much sooner than anticipated. As long as we don’t have any weather-related issues, we’re anticipating being done by Friday of next week.”
The construction project began in early October to address pavement settlement caused by shifting around a large stormwater culvert beneath the roadway. Though the area remained safe for travel, repairing it before winter was critical to prevent further damage from freezing and thawing cycles.
Hilton attributes the project’s accelerated timeline to both favorable conditions and the responsiveness of the contractor.
“We haven’t dealt with any major issues with the dig out,” Hilton explained. “We’re finding some saturation, but we’re putting in a GEO barrier to combat that in the future. Honestly, most of it is the responsiveness of the contractor, both to the traffic and the timeline. The contractor has done a great job.”
The GEO barrier being installed will help protect the roadway from future water intrusion and soil movement, which are key factors in preventing similar settlement from recurring.
Over the coming days, crews will complete the final dig out and replacement work. Once that’s finished, they’ll pour new curb and gutter, then move on to paving, striping and collar work on manholes and water valves.
If all goes as planned, the work zone will be cleared and traffic fully restored before the end of October.
Hilton emphasized that while the project has gone smoothly so far, weather remains a variable.
“This problem is now resolved,” he said. “The caveat is assuming everything goes to plan. Weather could interrupt this.”
Once complete, the repaired section of Pony Express Parkway will feature reinforced infrastructure designed to improve long-term roadway stability and performance. The upgrades not only resolve the current pavement issue but also strengthen the area against future settlement, reducing the likelihood of repeat disruptions.
