New traffic signal to improve flow at Pony Express, EM Blvd. intersection
The much-anticipated traffic signal at the busy intersection of Pony Express Parkway and Eagle Mountain Blvd. will become fully operational tomorrow, Wednesday, Aug. 13.
Starting at 1 p.m., the new signal will operate on flashing red to help drivers adjust while the signal is programed. Around 3 p.m., the signal will be fully activated, marking a major milestone in the City’s efforts to improve traffic flow at one of Eagle Mountain’s most congested intersections.
While the signal goes live, residents should be aware that some turning lanes on the west side — both northbound and southbound — will remain closed as crews continue final sidewalk and landscaping work.
“This intersection upgrade has been a project in the works for quite some time, and seeing the signal become operational is a big step forward,” said Eagle Mountain Assistant City Engineer David Salazar. “Our goal is to improve daily commutes and reduce congestion, especially during the busy morning and evening rush hours. We also substantially improved pedestrian safety by adding safe walking routes crosswalks and signage so crossings are protected with the signal at the intersection.”
The project replaced the existing roundabout with a multi-lane, signalized intersection designed to better accommodate Eagle Mountain’s growing traffic demands. The project also moved the crosswalks directly to the intersection with improved striping and signage.
The roundabout previously created backups during peak times, particularly when school and work traffic surged. It also created treacherous pedestrian crossings as the crosswalks were past the intersection.
“With multiple lanes in each direction, the new signalized intersection will allow for smoother, safer, and more efficient travel through this busy corridor,” Salazar explained. “Motorists will notice shorter wait times and improved traffic flow almost immediately. Pedestrians will feel more confident as they cross the intersection.”
Construction began in early summer and was completed on schedule, despite some remaining finishing touches. Temporary traffic signals and lane adjustments during construction helped maintain access and minimize disruptions.
“We appreciate the community’s patience throughout construction,” Salazar said. “We’re confident these improvements will serve Eagle Mountain well for years to come.”
Drivers are encouraged to remain attentive as some lane restrictions persist during final landscaping and sidewalk work. Updates and details will continue to be available on the City’s “What’s Happening” page.
