New boundaries head to county review for future school district
Progress continues on the creation of a new school district covering Eagle Mountain, Saratoga Springs, Fairfield and Cedar Fort.
With the Alpine School District set to split into three separate districts, the West School District Board of Directors Boundary Committee has now finalized a proposed Board Seat Boundary Map, which will be submitted to the County Commissioners for approval in early April.
“This process has been both exciting and challenging,” said Committee member Melissa Clark. “Having raised my family here, I know how important it is for our schools to have strong, local representation.”
With rapid population growth in the region, the committee has worked to ensure boundaries reflect the community’s needs.
The process had to follow state guidelines and census mapping blocks, balancing growth projections with fair representation.
“We worked hard to make sure these boundaries reflect our growth while keeping neighborhoods and communities together as much as possible,” said Clark.
Under the Alpine School District, seven board members were responsible for overseeing 18 cities. The new West School District, however, will have seven board members representing just four cities. This localized approach is expected to bring a more responsive and engaged form of governance tailored to the needs of western Utah County residents.
“Taxpayers deserve a school board that understands the unique needs of our area, and this new district allows for more focused leadership and accountability,” said Clark. “And this isn’t the end—after the 2030 Census, the new school board will take another look to make sure we’re keeping up with the needs of our kids, schools, and the community as a whole.”
Key Details of the Proposed Map
- Seats 1, 6, and 3 are in Eagle Mountain, with Seat 1 also covering Fairfield and Cedar Fort.
- Seats 5 and 7 are in Saratoga Springs.
- Seats 2 and 4 cross city boundaries to balance population and account for future growth.
State law mandates that board seat areas be as equal in total population as possible. The committee incorporated both current data and future growth projections to ensure long-term viability of the boundaries. Adjustments were made in anticipation of evolving population trends through the next census in 2030.
The County Commissioners will review and vote on the proposed map in early April.
Meanwhile, residents are encouraged to stay informed and participate in public forums to provide feedback on the district’s establishment.
