EM Senior Center temporarily closed for expansion work

The Eagle Mountain Senior Center has temporarily closed its doors through the end of October to make way for an expansion that will provide more space for programs, activities and the Senior Advisory Council.

The project is funded in part by a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), which allows cities to invest in facilities that directly benefit residents. According to Eagle Mountain Events Manager Dawn Hancock, the expansion will help meet growing demand among local seniors for more activities and social opportunities.

“We’re thrilled to see this come together,” Hancock said. “The seniors have been asking for more space for quite a while, and this addition will allow us to expand our programming and make the center even more welcoming.”

The new addition, which adds a single-wide modular unit, will be joined to the existing structure, which currently consists of three modular trailers. The contractor is working to position and connect the new building, after which the interior spaces will be rearranged to better serve residents.

One of the key changes includes relocating the Senior Advisory Council’s office to the new section of the building. The added space will also allow for new classes and gatherings.

“We’re adding an open area that can host things like quilting groups, exercise classes or whatever else the seniors are interested in,” Hancock said. “We’ve already had a lot of excitement about what kinds of programs we’ll be able to offer once everything’s finished.”

In addition to the new building, the parking lot will also be expanded to ensure there’s enough space to accommodate the center’s regular visitors and larger events.

The Senior Center officially closed on Oct. 13 and is expected to reopen in early November, once construction is complete and the space has been reorganized.

During the closure, senior activities have been paused, but City staff are eager to welcome everyone back once the doors reopen.

“The community of seniors here is so supportive and enthusiastic,” Hancock said. “They’ve been incredibly patient during this process, and we can’t wait to celebrate with them when we reopen.”

Seniors interested in learning more or getting involved once the center reopens are encouraged to stop by for a tour and visit with a member of the Events Department. Staff can also be reached at seniorcenter@eaglemountain.gov or by calling 801-789-6600.
