EM resident appointed as new director of Utah DWR
Riley Peck, a long-time conservationist and seasoned wildlife management professional, has been named the new director of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR).
Peck officially assumes his role on Jan. 13, succeeding J Shirley, who retired on Dec. 31, 2024, after decades of dedicated service.
“I have always loved wildlife, fishing, hunting, camping and all things outdoors and always had a desire to operate in that space,” Peck said in a DWR press release.
Peck’s journey with the DWR began in 2006, progressing through a variety of roles that honed his expertise.
From his early days as a native aquatics technician to serving as a wildlife biologist, he built a reputation for his commitment to preserving Utah’s natural resources. In 2016, Peck became the Central Region wildlife manager, and most recently, he served as the division’s legislative liaison.
With nearly two decades of experience, Peck’s extensive background positions him well to lead the DWR’s ongoing mission to conserve Utah’s diverse fish and wildlife populations.
Peck expressed gratitude and enthusiasm for getting to do what he is passionate about.
“Getting to do what I am passionate about as a living has been a great privilege, and I feel truly lucky that I have had the opportunity to work in wildlife management,” Peck said.
DNR Executive Director Joel Ferry praised Peck’s accomplishments, citing his role in advancing data-driven wildlife management. Ferry also noted that Peck was recognized as the 2024 DNR employee of the year.
Peck plans to build on the division’s strong foundation by enhancing data collection efforts to improve wildlife management strategies. His leadership aims to balance the growing demands on Utah’s natural resources while preserving the state’s outdoor heritage.
Peck holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Utah and a master’s degree in plant and wildlife science from Brigham Young University and calls Eagle Mountain home.
His lifelong passion for the outdoors aligns with the DWR’s mission. An avid hunter, angler, and camper, Peck spends his free time exploring Utah’s landscapes with his wife and children.
