County Commission approves school board map for new district
Progress continues on the creation of a new school district covering Eagle Mountain, Saratoga Springs, Fairfield, and Cedar Fort.
With the Alpine School District set to split into three separate districts, the Utah County Commission approved a map Wednesday night, officially establishing the school board districts for what is informally being referred to as the “Lake Mountain School District.”
“The redistricting process involved the input of citizens and elected officials as we worked to collaborate together to create maps that reflected the needs of our community, growth, school boundaries, and fair representation,” said Alpine School District Board Member Julie King.
With rapid population growth in the region, the committee has worked to ensure boundaries reflect the community’s needs. The process followed state guidelines and census mapping blocks, balancing growth projections with needs for representation.
The committee also paid special attention to high-growth areas like Firefly, Overland, and Parkway Fields, ensuring that future development was factored into the planning process.
“It wasn’t just about drawing lines,” said Boundary Committee Member Melissa Clark. “It was about building a foundation for stronger representation and better outcomes for our kids so that no one community would feel left out or overwhelmed.”
Under the Alpine School District, seven board members were responsible for overseeing 14 municipalities. The new district, however, will have seven board members representing just four cities. This localized approach is expected to bring a more responsive and engaged form of governance tailored to the needs of western Utah County residents.
“I appreciate all who were involved in a process that was intentional and community-centered,” King said. “I am grateful for our community that has shown an investment in public education and look forward to the creation of something beautiful as we form a new school district.”
Key Details of the Approved Map:
- Seats 1, 6, and 3 are in Eagle Mountain, with Seat 1 also covering Fairfield and Cedar Fort.
- Seats 5 and 7 are in Saratoga Springs.
- Seats 2 and 4 cross city boundaries to balance population and account for future growth.
State law mandates that board seat areas be as equal in total population as possible. Adjustments were made in anticipation of evolving population trends through the next census in 2030.
“While we were limited by official census data and legal guidelines, we did everything we could to make choices that will serve our growing neighborhoods well,” Clark said.
Residents who want to serve on the new school board should begin preparing now. The filing period is set for June 2–6, 2025, with elections scheduled as follows:
- Primary Election (if needed): Aug. 12, 2025
- General Election: Nov. 4, 2025
Candidates will only run against others within their specific boundary area. For more information, visit the temporary Lake Mountain School District website.
*Note: A previous version of this article claimed the Alpine School District serves 18 cities. It serves 14 municipalities.
