City’s Bag the Leaf program returns for fall

Eagle Mountain residents will once again have the chance to help keep their community clean and prevent flooding this fall through the City’s annual Bag the Leaf Program, returning Tuesday, Oct. 21.

The program, organized by Eagle Mountain City’s Stormwater department, gives residents a convenient way to dispose of fallen leaves while protecting the City’s stormwater system from blockages.

“This program might seem simple, but it plays a big role in keeping our city safe and looking good,” said Larry Diamond, Eagle Mountain City Stormwater Supervisor. “When leaves collect in gutters or drains, they can clog the stormwater system and cause localized flooding. By participating, residents are helping prevent that.”

From Oct. 21 through Dec. 19, residents can drop off filled leaf bags at two designated dumpster locations:

Dumpsters will be available daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. during the program period.

City-provided leaf bags can be picked up free of charge from three locations, Monday through Friday between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.:

Once filled, bags should be returned to one of the two dumpster sites. The Stormwater department reminds residents to bag leaves only and exclude branches, grass clippings, or household waste.

“The more we can keep non-leaf material out of the dumpsters, the smoother the composting process goes,” said Diamond. “It keeps disposal costs low and helps us run the program efficiently for everyone.”

Residents looking to dispose of other yard debris or household waste can use the two free annual dump passes available per household at City Hall.

Diamond said programs like Bag the Leaf show how small, local actions add up to major benefits for the community.

“We see hundreds of bags come in each year,” he said. “That’s hundreds of opportunities where leaves aren’t sitting in gutters or being washed into storm drains. It’s a simple act of community pride.”

The Stormwater department encourages residents to participate early in the season and to check their own storm drains regularly to help prevent clogs.
