Public Library promotes financial literacy resources
The Eagle Mountain Public Library is launching another effort to promote financial literacy among residents by showcasing a variety of educational resources.
Through weekly social media posts and in-house displays, the library aims to provide the community with tools to improve financial decision-making and protect themselves from scams.
“Financial literacy is essential for individuals and families to make informed decisions about their money,” said Michele Graves, director of the Eagle Mountain Public Library. “We want to ensure our residents have access to credible resources that can help them budget, save, and protect their financial well-being.”
As part of this initiative, the library will highlight several online resources provided by the Utah State University (USU) Extension. Each week, the library will post links to educational tools on social media, directing residents to workshops, webinars, and financial planning guides.
Among the resources being featured are:
- Scam Awareness and Prevention: The library will share information from the Utah Department of Commerce’s Division of Consumer Protection, which offers guidance on avoiding fraud and reporting scams. Websites such as scams.utah.gov and dcp.utah.gov provide valuable insights into identifying and preventing financial fraud.
- Financial Education Tools: USU Extension offers a range of programs, including the Empowering Financial Wellness classes and webinars (extension.usu.edu/finance), which teach budgeting, credit management, and financial goal-setting strategies.
- Household Information Records Organizer (HIRO): This resource (extension.usu.edu/finance/hiro) helps families organize important financial and household information in one place for easy access during emergencies.
- PowerPay Debt Reduction Tool: Designed to help individuals develop a personalized debt reduction plan, this tool (extension.usu.edu/powerpay) can assist users in paying off debts efficiently while saving money on interest.
- Youth Financial Education: The library is also emphasizing financial literacy for young people through financeintheclassroom.org, a resource that provides engaging financial lessons for students and parents to explore together.
In addition to digital resources, the library will set up in-house displays featuring books, pamphlets, and other physical materials available for checkout. These displays will change periodically to cover topics such as budgeting, saving for college, and retirement planning.
“We understand that financial education isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach,” Graves said. “By offering a mix of online tools, physical resources, and social media outreach, we hope to reach residents of all ages and financial backgrounds.”
The Eagle Mountain Public Library encourages residents to take advantage of these free resources and stay informed about financial best practices.
