Eagle Mountain library hosts 3D Art Contest for teens

The Eagle Mountain Public Library is hosting its annual 3D Art Contest for teens ages 13 to 18.

The library hopes to attract more teens and tweens into the library to participate in its programs. This initiative is part of a larger effort to expand library programming and offer more opportunities for community engagement.

Passive Programming

The library has found that passive programs, where participants can take materials home and work on them, are particularly effective. The 3D Art Contest allows teens to work on their creations at their own pace and return them to the library for display.

Assistant Library Director Kristin Allred joked that the library’s Passive Programmer, Jennifer Wandell, is anything but passive.

“She’s passionate about art contests and organizes this event annually,” said Allred.

The library has experienced significant growth in its programming over the past six years. They have moved from offering a few story times a week to having programs almost every day. This expansion is due to increased staffing and a push for more creative and relevant programs for teens.

This Year’s Theme: Quilling

This year, the 3D art contest involves quilling, a technique where strips of paper are rolled, shaped, and glued to create decorative designs. Participants will be using provided materials to create their own unique quilled designs. The library is also offering a 3D art workshop on Jan. 9, where Jen will be available to assist participants, provide ideas, and offer examples.

How it Works

●Participants are given about a month to complete their 3D art projects.

●The library provides a 5×5 square base and strips of paper.

●Teens can use tools like pencils to wrap and mold the paper into their desired shapes.

●Completed projects are displayed in the teen area, and throughout the library, allowing patrons to vote for their favorites.

Supplies are limited. For additional information, contact the library at 801-789-6623.
