Eagle monument to be removed as plans progress to rebuild area

Eagle Mountain City is preparing to take down the eagle monument located at the intersection of Eagle Mountain Blvd and SR-73 as part of an effort to rebuild the area in the near future.

The monument, which has stood as a familiar landmark for many years, has recently been assessed and found to be deteriorating, prompting the City to take action before it poses a safety risk.

“We know this is a recognizable point on the map for our residents,” says City Communications Manager Tyler Maffitt. “We want to reassure residents that the area will be improved into something new that will last for many years into the future.”

The rock base that has supported the iconic eagle for years has shown signs of significant wear and tear. According to Public Works Director Brad Hickman, there has been growing concern about the structure’s condition, and a decision has been made to address the issue before it leads to further complications.

“We understand the historical significance of this monument, but the rock is failing,” Hickman said. “Our goal is to preserve its historical appeal while ensuring it is safe and sustainable.”

City staff has been exploring several options for replacing or rebuilding the monument. One option under consideration is recreating the rock structure with a durable material that can withstand the elements and ensure long-lasting stability.

The idea of using a reproduction of the existing rock is being carefully evaluated, though it is noted that replicating the original structure may prove challenging.

Another option being discussed involves modernizing the monument while still honoring its historical roots. This plan proposes creating a new base made of steel, which would feature the City’s new brand and logo. The eagle would be placed on top of the steel base, allowing the monument to reflect the city’s future vision while preserving the iconic symbol of the eagle that has become so familiar to residents and visitors.

As of now, City officials are in the process of gathering renderings of these potential designs to present. Once a design is selected, the City will move forward with the rebuild and establish a timeline for construction.

For now, the primary concern is safely removing the monument to avoid any further damage or risk to the surrounding area.

The removal of the monument will take place soon, with the goal of ensuring that any debris from the failing rock base does not end up in the right of way of Eagle Mountain Blvd., potentially creating hazards for drivers.

“We appreciate the public’s understanding as we work to improve the city and preserve the iconic eagle monument in a way that reflects both our history and future aspirations,” said Hickman.

As plans move forward, the City is committed to keeping the community informed.
