CVHS cheerleading captures Class 5A co-ed state championship

The Cedar Valley High School Varsity Cheerleading team has brought home the Class 5A Co-Ed state championship.

The 28-member team, consisting of 21 girls and 7 boys, delivered standout performances across all three categories of the competition, earning first-place honors in each and taking home the overall title.

Head Coach Christian Adkinson, who has led the program for the past four years, reflected on the hard work that made the victory possible.

“We started working on the routine back in July,” Adkinson said. “It all came together mid-August, and we’ve been running it ever since. Practices happen every B-day, but we also meet in the evenings or on Saturdays. It’s a lot of work.”

The state competition required teams to perform three distinct routines: a traditional show routine with stunts and dance elements, a crowd-leading cheer, and a halftime-style dance designed to engage the audience.

“The difficulty of our stunts was a big factor, but the way the kids performed was what really set us apart,” Adkinson explained. “Their timing, synchronization, and showmanship were incredible. There was just something special about how they executed everything that day.”

The team’s clean execution and energy were enough to earn first place in every category.

For the athletes, hearing their school’s name announced repeatedly during the awards ceremony was an emotional experience.

“I wasn’t sitting with them during the announcements—I was across the arena—but every time Cedar Valley was called, they were excited. Some of them started crying,” Adkinson said. “They were so pumped. It was fun to watch their reactions.”

The team’s achievement didn’t go unnoticed in Eagle Mountain. The team was greeted with a police and fire escort from Ridley’s Family Markets to Cedar Valley High School, where they were cheered on by the high school community.

Adkinson believes the championship win sets a strong precedent for the team’s future.

The season isn’t over for Cedar Valley Cheer. The team still has additional competitions ahead, including a national competition in California. While the state championship was a major milestone, Adkinson said the team is focused on continuing to grow and perform at their best.

“It sets a standard now,” he said. “The kids know what they’re capable of, and that confidence will carry them forward. Winning state shows them what hard work and dedication can accomplish, not just in cheer, but in life.”
