Annual chip seal project continues extending life of local roadways

Update: The project will not begin until Friday May 23 due to a mechanical failure on the equipment.  It is expected to start sometime after 9am.  This will likely put the rest of the schedule on Virtual Lane and Pole Canyon Road one day behind the original schedule.

Eagle Mountain City will kick off its summer chip seal maintenance project this Thursday, May 22, beginning with Virtual Lane.

The project is part of the City’s ongoing commitment to maintaining road quality and extending the life of its growing transportation network.

“This type of preventative maintenance is one of the smartest investments we can make in our road infrastructure,” said Zac Hilton, public services manager for Eagle Mountain City. “By sealing out moisture and reinforcing the road surface, chip sealing helps prevent potholes and more costly damage in the future.”

The chip seal process involves applying a layer of liquid asphalt followed by a layer of light weight chips, designed to avoid cracking windshields and minimizing chip loss when being snowplowed.

The project will unfold in three major phases, with each roadway section identified by color-coded maps to correspond with a coordinated construction schedule:

To minimize disruptions, the City has taken careful steps to avoid impacting major community events. Notably, work on Pony Express Parkway will begin after the City’s annual Pony Express Days festivities, which include a parade, carnival and other events that draw thousands of residents and visitors.

“We made it a priority to schedule work around Pony Express Days so that residents can enjoy the celebration without road closures or construction equipment nearby,” Hilton said.

The City is also coordinating closely with Meta, whose Eagle Mountain data center campus is directly affected by the work on Pole Canyon Road and Virtual Lane. By working hand-in-hand with local employers, the City aims to reduce disruption to workers and maintain safe access throughout the duration of the project.

As with any outdoor infrastructure project, timelines may shift due to weather conditions or equipment availability. Residents are encouraged to follow the City’s “What’s Happening” page for updates and traffic advisories.

“Motorists should expect minor delays in the areas we’re treating,” Hilton added. “We’re asking for patience and cooperation as we complete this work. The short-term inconvenience will result in long-term gains for the safety and durability of our roadways.”

Maps and a detailed project schedule are available, and residents with specific questions or concerns are encouraged to reach out to Eagle Mountain’s Streets department.

“We’re proud of the work we’re doing to care for our City’s infrastructure,” Hilton said. “Maintaining safe and reliable roads is one of the most important services we provide—and we appreciate the community’s support as we complete this essential project.”
