Nuclear energy Town Hall looks to answer resident questions

Eagle Mountain City is set to host a town hall meeting on March 10 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., focusing on the exploration of nuclear energy generation as a potential energy solution for the community.

The event aims to provide residents with comprehensive information, address questions, and foster a transparent dialogue about the safety and economic implications of adopting nuclear energy.

“We know our community has questions,” says Eagle Mountain City Communications Manager Tyler Maffitt. “We also believe that residents deserve clear and concise answers to those questions.”

Small modular reactors are a type of nuclear fission reactor designed to be built in factories and shipped to sites for installation. They offer a smaller footprint and are considered more flexible compared to traditional large-scale reactors.

Proponents argue that SMRs can provide a reliable and clean energy source, potentially reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting energy independence.

The town hall will commence with the distribution of informational materials to attendees. A panel of experts will then present insights into various aspects of nuclear energy, including technological advancements, safety protocols, regulatory frameworks, and economic considerations.

“This will be an excellent opportunity to be informed about nuclear power generation technologies, their potential, how risks are managed, and what it could mean for our City should a project ever be proposed in the Cedar Valley,” says City Economic Development Director Evan Berrett.

Following the panel presentations, the floor will be opened for a question-and-answer session, allowing residents to voice their concerns, seek clarifications and engage directly with the experts.

The exploration of SMRs comes at a time when Eagle Mountain is evaluating sustainable and long-term energy solutions to meet the growing needs of its population and business landscape.

Nuclear energy, particularly through the deployment of non-water cooled SMRs, is being considered for its potential to provide a stable and low-carbon power supply. The town hall aims to shed light on how SMRs could fit into the City’s energy strategy, complementing other renewable sources and contributing to the state of Utah’s environmental goals.

The City emphasizes the importance of community involvement in this decision-making process. Residents are encouraged to attend the town hall, bring forward their questions and engage in meaningful discussions. The insights and feedback gathered during the event will play a crucial role in shaping the city’s approach to energy solutions and ensuring that any decisions made align with the community’s values and expectations.

“If residents can leave this Town Hall feeling informed and having the information they need to form a high-quality opinion, we have accomplished our goals.”
