West School District Advisory Committee formed to guide school district boundaries

With the Alpine School District set to split into three separate districts, including a new district encompassing Eagle Mountain, Saratoga Springs, Fairfield, and Cedar Fort, progress is underway to ensure a seamless transition.

A redistricting advisory committee has been appointed to focus on establishing school district boundaries for the West School District.

The advisory committee, chaired by Mac Sims, includes members such as City officials, public representatives and members of the Alpine School District.

Among them is Eagle Mountain City Councilmember Melissa Clark, who emphasized the committee’s mission to create a school district tailored to the unique needs of the rapidly growing western communities.

“I look forward to working with this committee to draw district boundaries for the West School District,” Clark said. “The future boundaries should be drawn fairly and accurately to ensure the residents of the West District continue to have a voice in education.”

The committee will focus on developing district boundaries that comply with state requirements and facilitate fair representation. The boundaries will help shape how the new school board will operate and address localized concerns.

Alpine School District School Board Member Julie King said she’s has high hopes for the process.

“I am looking forward to a highly collaborative process that will unite our communities in creating fair representation, a goal we have been striving for in our area for decades,” King said.

The formation of the committee follows the approval of Proposition 14 in November, which secured support from 62% of voters in the western region. The decision reflects the community’s commitment to local control over educational resources and governance.

Committee members will work closely with county officials, community members and stakeholders to draft proposed boundaries by March, with a final map expected in April.

Elections for the school board will follow later in the year, with the newly established district set to begin operations in 2027.

“This area is growing very quickly,” Clark said. “Those serving on this advisory committee live within the boundaries of the future West School District. We’re all well aware of how growth is impacting the needs of our students. Having a voice in this area is crucial to this process.”

As the transition progresses, the committee encourages residents to stay informed and participate in public forums to provide feedback on the proposed boundaries and other elements of the district’s establishment.
